Six Men's fisherfolk washed out

  • Mensch, was ist denn da los???

FISHERMEN, MOTORISTS and pedestrians from Six Men's, St Peter, had to deal with raging waters which made their way onshore and into the street yesterday.

Being seafarers, the men ensured their craft were protected and the catches placed in buckets and up high on blocks so the debris being washed in would not affact their fish.

Fisherfolk said the height of some waves and turbulence of the water made it difficult to get the catch ashore in the small boats which they rowed in from the larger craft.

Chelston Thomas, who was fishing for 15 years, said the biggest problem was the erosion which this situation was causing.

He said three weeks ago they faced a similar situation and the need to have a proper boat facility in the area was becoming even more urgent.

"We need something like what they have in Speightstown; somewhere to tie up the boats. We should have a jetty so we could step off the boat onto the land. We also need a tammy lift to get the boats out of the water," said Thomas.

He told the DAILY NATION the rough seas began from 10 a.m. and worsened as the day went along.

The movement of the sand from the shore was also of grave concern.

"The sand is being eroded and eventually there will be no beach," Thomas exclaimed.
